Nike SB Orange Label Dunk Mid Pro 'Griffey Jr’
Awarded a place within the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016, George Kenneth Griffey Jr. - otherwise known as ‘The Kid’ - is known for his natural sporting talents and stylish flair that earned him thirteen All-Star Game selections, ten Gold Glove Awards and seven Silver Slugger Award throughout his twenty-two year career. Retired since 2016, Griffey played for the Seattle Mariners for the majority of his profession and finished with a .284 batting average, including 2,781 hits, 1,662 runs scored and 1,836 RBI...so it’s no surprise that Nike SB have paid homage to the legendary player and has chosen to do so through the latest Orange Label release.
In 1996 the first shoe celebrating the iconic baseball player was introduced through the appropriately named ‘1996 Air Griffey Max 1’ which was crafted with durable materials upon a sculpted outsole encasing numerous Air Max bubbles and adorned with ‘25’ numeric decoration that brought attention to the baseball players team number. It's only fitting that the archival design has played a key part in the creation of this Nike SB Dunk Mid Pro which uses the same three colour tones - black, white and ‘fresh water’ - with alternative ‘58 decoration, that highlights the outfielders playing card number, and large signature Swoosh embellishment.
Unveiled as part of the ongoing Nike SB Orange Label collection which highlights some of the best loved Nike SB footwear models and reimagines them in premium materials with the help of team riders and key players within the industry, this Nike SB Dunk Mid Pro design has uppers made from a combination of smooth black and ‘fresh water’ nubuck which alternates between the toe vamp, side panels and heel. Crisp white accents contrast to the two tones within Swoosh tick embroidery to one side of the toes, across large leather Swoosh ticks on either side panel, along the secure lace fastening and within ‘58’ numeric embellishment on the velcro strap around the top of the tongue. Like any true Dunk model, the tongue and ankle border has been generously padded for comfort and a soft fabric lining runs throughout the inside of the shoe and surrounds the sockliner which holds a Zoom Air unit for impact support. For an impressive level of durability, the black rubber outsole has a full cupsole stitch and underfoot the circular tread pattern has been influenced by original Nike Dunk models and incorporates a forefoot pivot circle to deliver multidirectional grip.
Following on from his retirement, Griffey Jr continues to have a lasting effect on the sporting industry whose ‘effortless’ reputation was put straight during his Hall of Fame induction ceremony where he stated “Just because I made it look easy didn’t mean it was.” - a comment that is perfectly in tune with Nike’s ethos and approach to supporting their international athletes across a number of sports categories.
