Skateboarding and basketball are two sports that have always gone hand in hand and the new release of the Nike SB Air Jordan 1 OG Defiant Shoes pays homage to their special relationship. The upper has been designed with white leather decorating the toebox, quarter panels and accenting the heel. The colour scheme of the LA Lakers has had an obvious influence through overlays of purple surrounding the shoe, contrasted by golden detailing on the swoosh and raised collar. However, having been dubbed the LA to Chicago pack, the upper rubs away through wear to display a crimson layer with sullied tones of black for a truly worn-in finish that replicates the colours of the Chicago Bulls. Final detailing includes an iconic Air Jordan stamp on the collar of the shoe.
The Air Jordan 1 has been incorporated into skateboarding culture since its debut thirty years ago, most notably Lance Mountain was an advocate of their performance due to Nike Air technology which ensures responsive cushioning whether you’re on the court or on the board. Additionally the raised collar, which inspired the design of the SB Dunk Hi, provides crucial ankle support and a durable rubber outsole offers multidirectional traction on a variety of surfaces, making it ideal for every-day wear.
The Air Jordan 1 first released in 1985, revolutionising the traditional style in basketball. The shape, colorways and design completely disrupted the norms, both in and out of the sport, at the time. Years following the initial release, the Air Jordan I began to assimilate into skateboarding with a variety of legends appreciating its cushioned and supportive design. This laid the foundation for countless collaborations including some with the likes of Lance Mountain and Craig Steyck.
