Nike SB x Soulland Blazer Mid
Spotted on the feet of models and Soulland co-founder Silas Alder during the brands SS20 show at Copenhagen fashion week earlier this year, the Nike SB x Soulland Blazer Mid marks the latest FRI.day 03 collaboration between Nike SB and one of Denmark’s most celebrated fashion labels with an aesthetic that combines old school allure with a variety of unique, modern details.
As a fresh take on one of Nike’s OG models, the Nike SB x Soulland Blazer Mid uses a combination of textural, premium materials and refined details which reflects Alder’s memories of sneaker culture in Tokyo, Japan, which has provided key inspiration for this latest model within the FRI.day series. Ultra thin leather uppers take centre stage, decorated with an all over light bone coloured snakeskin print with a mother of pearl finish and an eggshell rubber ollie overlay. Medium sized synthetic Swoosh ticks can be seen on the midfoot in addition to larger emblems that have been cut from a textural chenille fabric and loop around the back of the heel. Directly below the edge of the heel a patterned off-white leather panel insert provides a background for bold ‘FRI.’ and ‘day’ embossed lettering across the back of either shoe. The traditional lace up fastening has been enhanced by white and grey tone speckled laces with red aglets customised with ‘TKYO - 03 / SNAKE’ text and double pearlesc top eyelets which sit above a cushioned fabric tongue that has a printed design and exposed foam top edging. Nike SB branding has been printed onto a deep red leather label that wraps around the tongue as well as white panel overlays for further character. Aesthetically driven but maintaining its presence within skateboarding footwear, the thick eggshell white midsole has a textured surface pattern with an additional panel that wraps around the front of the toes for abrasion resistance. Underfoot a stamped motif in maroon reads ‘soulland’ across the left shoe and ‘FRi.day’ across the other against a herringbone tread that delivers a high level of grip.
Following on from the ultra clean design of the Nike SB x Soulland FRI.day 02 model which arrived over a decade after the brands first collaborated with Eric Koston, the Fri.day project continues to reflect feelings of freedom, friendship and fun. Soulland co-founder Silas Adler first began working on the brand after dropping out of school to focus on working, designing and skateboarding, so naturally the Fri.day collaboration is close to his roots and expresses an authentic approach to skate requirements whilst also being desirable within streetwear. Continuing the same disruptive design approach and borrowing details from previous projects, details such as a minimised midfoot Swoosh tick remains a core feature on the FRI.day 03 release which reinterprets the classic Nike Blazer silhouette that was first released in 1973.
Signifying Soulland’s efforts to become a fully fledged fashion brand that has its place amongst luxury labels, the SS20 show took place on the cobbled walkway of the round Sankt Thomas Plads plaza located in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen - the neighbourhood Soulland calls home. Marking the launch of both the latest footwear design and the brands womenswear line, the show was carried by a score of solely Scandinavian music and focused on the idea of pedestrians; how a walk can tell individual stories and express cultural differences. Demonstrating a blend of simplicity, which is a given for any Danish brand, but with their own added flare - an array of prints and textural fabrics were presented across formal yet wearable silhouettes styled with sandals, Doc Martens and the Nike SB Blazer to perfectly captured Soulland’s unique style that continues to gain momentum and strength with each new season.
