Nike SB x Poets Bruin
Making a strong return to the spotlight, OG Nike SB team rider Gino Iannucci is back with a new range of designs for his own label Poets and a stand out custom Nike SB Bruin model. Having joined Nike SB during its debut year in 2002, Gino has gained legendary status through his impressive push out, bold footwear choices and long standing sponsorships with the likes of Chocolate and more recently Jason Dill’s Fucking Awesome. Almost a decade since the first Poets x Nike SB collaboration which introduced a perforated navy and white Blazer Premium with an embroidered lighthouse emblem, this new release signifies the ongoing partnership between Nike SB and Iannucci as well as the celebration of both new and OG team riders.
For the Nike SB x Poets Bruin, black canvas uppers sits below suede overlays across the centre of the toe vamp, laces edge and heel whilst distinctive voltage green rubber Swoosh ticks overlays have been placed on the side of either foot that continue across the textural matte black vulcanised outsole. Constructed in the same black suede, the tongue is padded for comfort with an exposed foam top edge and a woven Nike SB x Poets label around its top edge. Helping to keep the foot in place, three pairs of different coloured laces arrive with each model and a monochrome striped sockliner carries a Zoom Air unit for all day comfort and protection against repetitive impacts. Signifying the collaboration, on the back of the heel white embroidered ‘POETS’ lettering stands out against a dark curved heel panel which connects to the vulcanised matte black rubber outsole. Auxetic shapes between the midsole and outsole expand and contract for equal pressure dispersal throughout each step and underfoot a herringbone tread pattern provides stable and consistent grip.
Since 2017 the Poets social channels have been referencing some of Gino Iannucci’s favourite cult movies such as The Outsiders, Over The Edge and Breaking Away which he uses as continuous inspiration in both his life and design style in addition to childhood memories and favoured sports alongside skateboarding hockey and tennis. Clips from classic films are posted alongside VHS inspired skate videos which express the inner workings of Gino whose distinctive style has earned him a long standing connection with Nike SB and OG status which is celebrated all around the world. After being spotted aged 15 Gino rode for Chocolate Skateboards for over 15 years before departing in 2014 to link up with Jason Dill’s FA who he remains sponsored by today. As one of the most talked about moments of his career, his part in Spike Jonze and Ty Evans’ ‘Yeah Right’ displayed a skate and fashion style before its time - smooth and effortless - which Gino has translated into Poets and this new footwear model.
Born in 1973 in Long Island, New York Gino Iannucci was one of Nike SB’s first team riders who continues to be acknowledged for his intriguing life story and memories of skateboarding during the ‘90s. As an extension of his interests and passions, Gino has been educating himself on cut and sew manufacturer which has resulted in his streetwear inspired designs for Poets, expressing a focus on quality, which are made between the USA and Bergamo, Italy in support of his roots.
