Nike SB Dunk 'Incredible Hulk' Cocktail Collection - Laser Orange
Paying homage to the infamous Incredible Hulk Cocktail, Nike SB have unveiled a 3-part collection of cocktail inspired Dunk Low Pro shoes which each boast a different ingredient themed colourway. Known as the Incredible Hulk, Green Eyed Monster, Shrock, or Hip and Hen, the cocktail was first crafted by U.S Army soldiers at Ft. Hood Texas in 2003 and as legend has it, you definitely know if you’ve experienced the distinctive green coloured blend thanks to its reputation for its ability to make you feel similar to the comic book superhero it’s so appropriately named after - until the next day.
It wasn’t until a Hpnotiq launch event in New York - one of two key ingredients in the cocktail - that the drink was made famous after a Hpnotiq employee witnessed few men drinking their blue coloured liqueur in comparison to women, which was put down to the tone of Hpnotiq being too effeminate, and so a bartender of the restaurant where the event was being held mixed Hennessy and juice with Hpnotiq to dilute the renowned fruit flavour and thus the Incredible Hulk cocktail we know today was officially introduced. Signifying the main ingredients in the cocktail - Hennessy, Hpnotiq and optional pineapple juice - each of the Nike SB Dunk Low Pro shoes have premium leather uppers and signature Dunk features such as a full cupsole stitch, padded tongue and Zoom Air unit within the heel that each provide high quality skate performance and exceptional comfort.
The Hennessy inspired Nike SB Dunk Low Pro model incorporates muslin and black colour tones which reference the label design associated with the heritage cognac drink which has a history that spans over 250 years. Originally created by Irishman Richard Hennessy in 1724, the drink is produced in a particular region of France and has become renowned with the rich and famous thanks to its often steep price point. Having collaborated with Louis Vuitton, Moët & Chandon and more recently A$AP Ferg for an exclusive track and cocktail kit, Hennessey adds vanilla and spice notes to the Incredible Hulk which helps to balance out the high level of fruit flavours from the other two ingredients.
In an expressive blue colourway that is renowned with the drink itself, the Hpnotiq colourway of the Nike SB Dunk Low Pro features blue fury, deep royal blue and crisp white accents within the shoes low-cut silhouette in addition to metallic tabs on the back of the heels. Having appeared in the music video for R.Kelly’s 2011 hit ‘Ignition’ and mentioned in the opening line of Fabolous’ ‘It’s My Party’, Hpnotiq is endorsed by American rapper Fat Joe and has been notorious within club and R&B culture since the early ‘00s. A unique blend of exotic fruit juices, french vodka and a touch of cognac, Hpnotiq is a native New York drink and was created in 2001 by Raphael Yakoby who was inspired to create his own party beverage after seeing a blue perfume bottle in Bloomingdale’s. As one of the best selling liqueurs in the US, the flavour adds a certain something to any cocktail and has been recently rebranded and reintroduced to a new market but for some it has remained a firm favourite since its early days.
The Nike SB Dunk Low Pro ‘Laser Orange’ carries a refreshing pineapple juice colourway, which is an optional touch in the cocktail, but one that is often recommended. White inserts at the side panels and heel accentuate the wide laser orange border around the toe vamp, laces border and heel whilst a striking regency purple Swoosh tick sits on either side of the shoe. The rubber outsole on this shoe is flexible and durable whilst underfoot the circular tread delivers multidirectional grip for an impressive level of boardfeel and traction. As always the padded tongue offers a high level of cushioning against the top of the foot and a branded tongue wraps around the top edge. Appropriately coloured laces that tie in with the rest of the design feature on each model and the Zoom Air unit within the sockliner delivers responsive cushioning.
As a concoction of colour across classic basketball inspired designs, this 3-style release from Nike SB taps into SB’s connections within music and party culture and shows one of many sides of the brand that isn’t afraid to be playful.
